What Master status means
Master is not a separate exam. It is a title ASE gives to a technician who holds all eight of the core automobile certifications: engine repair, automatic transmission, manual drive train, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance.
Because each test certifies one area, technicians collect them over time. Plenty of working technicians hold three or four and never go further, which is a normal and respectable place to be. Master status simply tells a shop that the technician has been tested across the whole vehicle and not only in a specialty.
The work experience rule
Passing a test is half of certification. ASE also asks for hands-on work experience, or a mix of formal training and experience, and the amount depends on the certification: ASE lists one, two or three years for repair technicians. You can register and test before you meet the requirement, but ASE holds the certificate until your experience form is reviewed and approved.
Formal training can stand in for part of the experience, so graduates of a trade school or manufacturer program may qualify sooner. ASE has its own form for documenting this, and a supervisor or employer usually has to confirm the details.
Which test to take first
There is no required order for A1 to A8, so a practical approach is to start with the area you work in every day, such as brakes or suspension. Your daily experience then carries over to the exam and the early pass builds momentum.
A6 (electrical) and A8 (engine performance) deserve special attention. They are the longest of the set, with 50 and 50 scored questions, and other ASE credentials depend on them: the L1 advanced engine performance test requires A8, and the L3 hybrid and electric test requires both A6 and A8.
Staying certified
Credentials expire after 5 years. The recertification tests are roughly half the length of the first-time tests, for example 23 questions for A1 against 45. A1 to A9 holders can also use the ASE Renewal App as an alternative to retesting, covered on our recertification page.
- Keep your certificate dates in one list so you can plan which tests come due first.
- Group recertification tests into one order to take advantage of ASE's fee cap.
- Ask your employer whether it pays for tests, as practice varies by shop and dealership.
Preparing for an A-series test
Exam questions usually describe a symptom and ask for the most likely cause or the best next step. Technicians who diagnose faults every day often know the practical answer but need practice with that wording, so a few sample questions are worth the time even for experienced people.
Pace matters too. A1 allows 75 minutes for 45 scored questions, which is about 1.7 minutes each, while A6 allows 90 minutes for 50. Read the ASE page for each test before you register, because ASE can change the details.
- Pick the test that matches what you did this month, so the practical knowledge is fresh.
- For A6, practice reading wiring diagrams and thinking through a circuit before reaching for a meter.
- Ask coworkers who already hold the credential which topics surprised them.
- Do not cram all eight tests into one season unless your work already covers every system.
