Sales Manager Jobs
Sales managers lead the dealership sales team, desk deals, and keep inventory, pricing and customer experience on track.
A sales manager works the desk, structures deals, appraises trades, prices inventory and coaches the consultants who bring customers to the table. Most are promoted from the floor or the finance office, so ask about team size, pricing authority and how the plan treats a thin month. The page shows BLS wages for the closest match, sales managers across all industries, which is a rough reference, not an offer.

A day as a Sales Manager
You work when the store is busiest: evenings, Saturdays and the last days of the month. The morning goes to the CRM, the inventory report and the sales meeting. After that you live between the floor and the desk, where a consultant brings a customer's numbers and you decide what the store can do. Slow stretches go to trade appraisals, aged units and pending deals that have not delivered.
The work nobody sees in a single day is coaching. You watch the board for who is working leads, step into stalled deals and sit down with a consultant whose numbers slipped. You also carry compliance, such as the website price matching the lot price and deal paperwork being complete before it reaches the office.
Titles shift. A desk manager, a used car manager and a general sales manager are different jobs, so read the duties. The role is hard on anyone who wants regular hours or gets their energy only from closing their own deals.
How to get in
Move Up from Top Consultant
The common route. A manager who has watched you sell and train a newer consultant is your best reference. Ask to sit at the desk on busy days, and be ready to say what happens to your own customers when you move.
Step Across from the Finance Office
F&I managers know lender rules and compliance. What you may lack is appraisal and inventory experience, so ask the used car manager to teach you trades and auction buying.
Run Used First
A used department teaches appraisal, market pricing and reconditioning cost on inventory that is yours to move. Many managers run used first, then take the new-car desk with a record of turned units.
Skills and credentials
Desk and Inventory
- Building a deal from the customer's budget and trade, not the sticker.
- Appraising with a method: condition, reconditioning cost, market, wholesale outlook.
- Knowing how holdback, incentives and floorplan interest change a new-car deal.
- Deciding which aged units to reprice or wholesale.
Coaching and Process
- A daily meeting that ends with follow-ups assigned by name.
- Coaching from a specific CRM record or deal, not general encouragement.
- A fair up rotation and lead assignment.
- Private, factual conversations with a consultant missing standards.
Compliance and Tools
- Checking advertised prices and incentives against what the store honors.
- Auditing your team's activity in the CRM and desking tool.
- Knowing your state's licensing rules for sales staff.
- There is no ASE test for sales management. Manufacturer and dealer group courses fill that gap.

BLS occupation: "Sales Managers" (11-2022), all industries. BLS reports this occupation as "Sales Managers" across every industry. A dealership new or used vehicle sales manager is one example, but the figures also include sales managers in manufacturing, software, finance and many other fields.
Pay commonly mixes salary or draw with commission on department gross, plus bonuses on units and sometimes manufacturer or satisfaction targets. The mix steers behavior: volume-heavy plans push discounting, gross-heavy plans can slow the floor. Ask which the store uses.
Ask how the target is set, what happens in a thin month, whether the plan changes mid-month, how chargebacks on your consultants' deals reach your pay, and what discount authority you hold. A manager who must call the general manager for every approval carries the numbers without the control.
The closest BLS match is Sales Managers (SOC 11-2022), and the page shows its wages. That category spans every industry, not only dealerships, so treat it as a rough guide and compare it with the written plan.
Build your AutoHire profile
- Write a headline that names what you manage, such as new car sales manager or used car manager, plus your brand.
- Under each job, state scope in the duties: consultants led, desking, appraisals, pricing and lead follow-up.
- Use searchable coaching terms such as call reviews, ride-alongs and CRM audits, since employers search profiles by keyword.
- Add brand experience with years on each, because employers filter candidate search by brand and by years of experience.
- Switch on open to work and set relocation honestly. Managers are often reached by direct message or a Spark to an open job, and the Verified badge shows you completed ID verification.
