Customer Success Manager Jobs
Customer success managers help dealerships and automotive clients get value from a company's products and services after they sign up.
A customer success manager works for a software or services company and makes sure the dealerships that bought the product actually use it and renew. Hires come from dealership departments, support, training or account management. Ask early how many accounts you would carry and whether your bonus depends on renewals.

A day as a Customer Success Manager
After the contract is signed, the real work begins. You run onboarding for a new dealership: who needs logins, what data moves from the old system, which department goes first. Then you train the people, often the BDC, the service advisors or the sales desk. The general manager who bought the tool rarely uses it, so adoption depends on whoever has the phone in hand.
Most weeks are check-in calls, usage reviews and fire drills. You see which stores stopped logging in, call the manager before renewal, and answer the email from a controller who was billed twice. You pass customer requests to product, and you tell sales when an account is unhappy before they pitch it something new.
It fits if you like fixing problems for people you will talk to again next month and can say no to a request without damaging the relationship. Ask whether you would visit stores or work by phone and video.
How to get in
Move Over from a Dealership Role
BDC managers, service advisors, trainers and F&I people know how the tool gets used on a busy day. Describe a time you rolled out a new process or trained coworkers, because that is the job. Vendors often start these hires in onboarding or training.
Start in Support or Onboarding
A support rep or implementation specialist handles tickets and setups, then moves up to accounts of their own. You learn the product thoroughly. Ask whether customer success is a separate team and how people get promoted.
Switch from Account Management or Sales
Account managers elsewhere already handle renewals and relationships. Learn the dealership departments and the product category so the first customer call is not a restart.
Skills and credentials
Customer Work
- An onboarding plan with dates, owners and a defined first win.
- Training adults who are busy, skeptical and doing the job on the side.
- Delivering bad news about a bug or missing feature plainly.
- Spotting an account at risk from usage data before it asks to cancel.
Automotive Knowledge
- How BDC, sales, service and F&I use the tool in a normal day.
- Store turnover, which means retraining never stops.
- Who signs the renewal and who really decides to keep a product.
- Systems your product connects to, such as CRM and DMS, and how a failed integration shows up in a store.
- Rooftop onboarding: rolling a product out store by store in a dealer group, with each rooftop's own users, data and go-live date.
Tools and Credentials
- Ticket and CRM habits: the issue, the owner and the next date.
- Screen-share training and short instruction sheets.
- No ASE test applies to this role.
- Vendor or brand experience: franchises and platforms you worked with.
How the job is paid
Customer success managers are usually paid a base salary plus a bonus. The bonus often rides on renewals, expansion of existing accounts, or retention across your book of customers. Ask which applies, how the target is set, and how many accounts you would carry. A few large groups is a different job from a long list of single stores.
Find out whether you are expected to sell upgrades or add-ons, since that moves the role from support toward sales. Ask how your bonus treats an account lost for reasons you cannot control, such as a store closing or being sold.
There is no exact Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation for this role, so no official wage figure is shown on this page.
Build your AutoHire profile
- Write a headline that says what you do for customers, such as dealer software onboarding and training.
- Use work history duties for the accounts you managed, the products you trained on and what changed, such as a department that started using a tool daily.
- If you were in a dealership, describe the process you rolled out or the people you trained. It is your strongest evidence.
- Add brand experience with years for the franchises or platforms you know, since employers can filter on it, and list vendor training under certifications.
- Switch on open-to-work, finish ID verification for the Verified badge, and answer any Spark with a note about the customers you have managed.
Interview questions to expect
- Q1
A store signed three months ago and nobody logs in. What do you do?
How to answerCheck usage by person, call the user the product should help most, and find out why they stopped. The cause is often a training gap or a process nobody owns. Name the specific fix you would offer.
- Q2
Describe an onboarding you ran that went badly.
How to answerGive a real case, say what went wrong, such as the department head never attending, and what you changed afterward. Own your part.
- Q3
A customer wants a feature we will not build.
How to answerExplain why in plain terms, offer an alternative, and pass the request to product with the customer's reason attached. Do not promise a date you do not control.
- Q4
How do you know an account is about to cancel?
How to answerName signals: logins dropping, your main contact leaving, unanswered emails, billing questions. Say what you do when you see two together.
- Q5
A general manager says the product does not work, but his team is not using it properly.
How to answerShow the usage data without blame, offer a short retraining with the actual users, and agree on a measurable result over a few weeks.

Customer Success Manager jobs: questions job seekers ask
What does a customer success manager do?
They onboard new customers, train staff, check usage and handle problems, with the goal of keeping the customer. They also pass feedback to product and sales.
How do I become a customer success manager in automotive?
Many start in dealership roles such as BDC, service advisor or trainer, or in support at a software company. Show you have trained people or rolled out a process.
Is customer success the same as customer support?
No. Support responds to problems as they come in. Customer success works ahead of them on adoption and renewal, though some companies combine the two.
Do customer success managers get commission?
Usually a bonus tied to renewals or retention, though some plans pay on upsells. Ask for the plan in writing and see how lost accounts are counted.
Do I need a degree to work in customer success?
Employers often value dealership or product experience as much as a degree. List education on your AutoHire profile if you have it.
Is customer success a good move from a service advisor role?
It can be, if you like training and problem-solving. Compare the pay plan with your current earnings, especially if you work on commission.
