BDC Manager Jobs
BDC (business development center) managers lead the team that handles inbound and outbound calls, texts and internet leads for the dealership.
A BDC manager runs the team that answers calls, works internet leads and books sales and service appointments, and is judged on how many appointments show and sell. It is closer to coaching a call center than to desking deals. Ask how leads reach your team and what the bonus counts.

A day as a BDC Manager
Monday starts with the weekend: untouched leads, missed calls and the appointment board. You listen to a few recorded calls, pick one to review with a rep and set the call list. Appointments get confirmed the day before and again that morning. Evening and Saturday coverage usually comes with the job.
You spend real time defending your team. A sales manager says your appointments were poor, and a service advisor says the customer never knew what time to arrive. Your answers come from set rate (leads that become appointments), show rate (appointments that arrive) and sold rate (shows that buy). Each points at a different problem.
It fits someone more interested in why a call went wrong than in making it. It does not fit someone who wants to price vehicles. The product is a confirmed appointment the floor has to honor.
How to get in
Move Up from BDC Representative
Reps who become team leads and build the schedule are first in line. Ask to hear calls with the manager and see the weekly reports, because the job runs on them.
Come Over from a Call Center
Leaders in outside call centers bring scheduling, quality monitoring and coaching. Learn what the floor does with an appointment and how a service drive works, and list your monitoring duties in plain terms on your profile.
Cross Over from Sales or Service
A consultant or advisor trusted with follow-up has credibility with the sales and service managers. You will need to learn call coaching and reporting.
Skills and credentials
Coaching and Scripts
- Coaching from a recorded call, stopping where the rep lost the appointment.
- Revising scripts without making reps sound canned.
- Rehearsing the better version, then checking the next call.
- Giving each rep one or two habits to fix, not a long review.
Reports and Process
- Reading set, show and sold rates together.
- Confirmation steps that cut no-shows, like a text with the address and who to ask for.
- Scheduling coverage against call volume.
- Agreeing with sales and service managers on what counts as a qualified appointment.
Tools and Rules
- Running a CRM with call logging, lead assignment and task reminders.
- Keeping consent and opt-out records for calls and texts, and checking the rules with compliance.
- Staffing both inbound and outbound queues.
- There is no ASE test for this role. CRM vendor training and store process take its place.
How the job is paid
BDC managers are usually salaried with a bonus tied to team results, such as appointments that show or vehicles and repair orders that sell. Ask what the bonus counts. Appointments set alone invite reps to book anyone, while shows and sold deals reward quality but depend on how well the floor works them.
Ask who verifies the numbers and from which system. If the sales manager decides what counts, the dispute is built into the plan. Ask whether the floor picks the best leads first, since you are paid on results you do not fully control. There is no exact BLS occupation for this role, so no wage figure is shown here.
Build your AutoHire profile
- Write a headline that says BDC manager and names the departments you cover, sales, service or both.
- Under each job, list the reps you led, the queues they worked and the reports you owned, such as show rate by source.
- Use the words employers search: call monitoring, scripts, appointment confirmation and lead routing.
- Name the CRM platforms you used, and brand experience with years if you worked a manufacturer's lead program.
- Switch on open to work and state your willingness to relocate, since employers filter on location and relocation. Answer a Spark or message with one sentence on the rate you last improved.
Interview questions to expect
- Q1
Which of set, show and sold rate did you work on first?
How to answerName one rate, the evidence from the CRM or recordings, what you changed and how the other two moved. Claiming all three rose with no reason sounds thin.
- Q2
Appointments are set but customers do not arrive. What changes?
How to answerConfirm the day before and that morning, send the address and the name of who they will meet, and check the floor is ready. Also check reps are not booking vague appointments to hit a number.
- Q3
How do you coach a rep from a recorded call?
How to answerPick one call, listen together, stop at the moment it went wrong and rehearse the better version. A group lecture is weaker.
- Q4
The sales manager says your appointments are low quality.
How to answerAsk for examples, compare lead source and show rate, check whether the floor worked them, and propose a shared definition of a qualified appointment.
- Q5
How do you keep the team within calling and texting rules?
How to answerRecord consent in the CRM, honor opt-outs at once, check do-not-call lists and confirm with compliance. Say you would check state and federal requirements and not guess.
Where the career goes
- 01
Internet Sales Manager
This adds price conversations and lead source accountability to what you already do.
- 02
Sales Manager
Some move to the desk after learning the floor. Ask the sales manager to teach desking and appraisal on slow days.
- 03
Group or Customer Experience Role
Dealer groups with several BDCs need someone to standardize scripts and reports, and service BDC experience can lead toward scheduling or customer relations.

BDC Manager jobs: questions job seekers ask
What does a BDC manager do at a car dealership?
Leads the reps who answer calls and texts, work internet leads and book appointments. Coaches calls, builds scripts, schedules coverage and reports set, show and sold rates.
What is the difference between a BDC manager and an internet sales manager?
A BDC manager mostly books appointments without quoting prices. An internet sales manager usually prices and sells to online shoppers. Some stores blur the titles, so read the duties.
How much does a BDC manager make?
Usually a salary plus a bonus tied to team results. No exact BLS occupation exists, so no figure is shown here. Compare the written bonus formulas.
Do I need dealership experience to be a BDC manager?
Not always. Call center leadership transfers, but you must learn what the floor does with an appointment. Stores want to see coaching and reporting, not only a title.
What should I ask in a BDC manager interview?
Current set, show and sold rates, how leads are assigned, what reps are paid on, what the bonus counts and whether the floor follows up on appointments.
Where can a BDC manager go next?
Internet sales manager, sales manager, a service-side customer experience role or a group-level BDC position.
