Internet Sales Manager Jobs
Internet sales managers lead the dealership team that answers online leads and moves shoppers from web inquiry to showroom appointment or sale.
An internet sales manager runs the team that answers online shoppers and carries them through the price conversation to an appointment or a sale. Unlike a pure BDC job, it usually involves quoting prices, so find out what pricing authority the store gives you. You are judged on which lead sources produce sold cars, not on how many leads arrive.

A day as an Internet Sales Manager
The day starts with overnight leads and chats, the ones a competitor may have answered first. You read what the team sent, because a reply that ignores the shopper's question is worse than a short, direct answer. Midday goes to coaching, price quotes and checking that the website price matches what your team quotes.
Weekly you review lead sources: website forms, chat, third-party listings and the manufacturer's site. The question is how many shows and sold deals each produced, not how many leads. You report that to the sales manager and the marketing manager and argue for the sources worth the money.
This job suits someone who writes well and can tell marketing a source is not working. It is wrong for anyone who wants all contact face to face.
How to get in
Move Up from Internet Sales Consultant
You already write the replies the team sends, so the step is coaching them and owning the reports. Keep examples of replies that turned into shows, and ask the current manager to let you run one weekly source review.
Step Over from BDC Leadership
BDC managers have response and appointment rates in hand. What you add is pricing conversation experience, so ask whether the store will give you quoting authority and a path toward sales manager.
Come from the Floor or from Marketing
A consultant who built most of their business from internet leads can move into this seat if they can coach others. Someone from listings or website work must learn to sell by message.
Skills and credentials
Selling by Message
- Replying to the question asked, with price and availability in the first lines.
- Handling the shopper who wants an out-the-door number by email before visiting.
- Moving a chat or email thread to a phone call and a set time.
- Coaching replies from sent messages instead of memory.
Sources and Reports
- Comparing forms, chat, third-party leads and manufacturer leads by shows and sold deals.
- Spotting duplicates and bad contact data and fixing them at the source.
- Reporting reply quality alongside response time.
- Talking with marketing about vehicle detail pages, photos and listed prices.
Pricing and Handoff
- Keeping quoted prices consistent with the advertised price and store policy.
- Handing an online customer to the floor with notes, a named person and a time.
- Working inside the CRM's lead routing and ownership rules.
- There is no ASE test for this role. CRM vendor training is the usual credential.
How the job is paid
Pay varies more here than in most dealership roles. If the department sells, the plan often resembles a sales manager's: salary or draw plus commission on units or gross from the internet team. If the role leans toward appointment setting, it looks like a BDC manager's, a salary with a team bonus. Ask which the store means, because it changes how you work.
The biggest dispute is credit. A shopper starts online, then walks in and meets a floor consultant. Ask who gets credit, how the rule is written and whether it is applied the same way each time. No exact BLS occupation matches this role, so no wage figure is shown here.
Build your AutoHire profile
- Write a headline that says internet sales manager or digital sales manager, with the size of your team.
- In your duties, name the lead sources you managed, the response standard you set and the handoff to the floor, since employers search profiles by keyword.
- Add the CRM you used, and appointments set, shown and sold if you tracked them.
- List brand experience and years, especially on a manufacturer's online programs, because employers filter candidate search by brand.
- Write the bio like a sample of your replies: short, clear and free of errors. Turn on open to work and watch for a Spark or message from a store with an open internet manager job.
Interview questions to expect
- Q1
A shopper emails for the out-the-door price and says they will not come in. What do you send?
How to answerA clear price with taxes and fees as your state and store policy allow, matching the advertised price, plus a specific invitation to see the vehicle.
- Q2
Which lead source would you cut first?
How to answerCompare appointments, shows and sold deals by source over a full period, not lead counts. Check duplicates, bad data and what each source costs.
- Q3
How do you keep replies from becoming templates?
How to answerReview sent messages, require a line that answers the shopper's question and coach with specific examples. A template can hold the structure but not the answer.
- Q4
How do you hand an online customer to the floor?
How to answerNotes in the CRM, the vehicle and price already discussed, a named person to meet and a time. The customer should not repeat anything.
- Q5
Who gets credit when a lead starts online and ends on the floor?
How to answerDescribe a written ownership rule, one person on point and shared notes, and how you settled a dispute. Two people calling the same customer is avoidable.
Where the career goes
- 01
Sales Manager
Online experience helps at the desk if you learn appraisal and how floor traffic behaves. Ask for desk time on slow days.
- 02
Internet or Digital Director
Larger stores and groups have a director over lead sources, the BDC and the website. The seat adds budget and vendor decisions.
- 03
Marketing or Vendor-side Roles
Some move to dealership marketing, an agency or a lead provider, using what they know about which sources produce buyers.
Terms you will hear
- Internet Lead
- An inquiry from a website form, chat, third-party site or manufacturer site.
- Lead Source
- Where a lead came from, used to compare what each channel produces.
- VDP
- Vehicle detail page, the web page for one vehicle in inventory.
- Out-the-door Price
- The total with taxes and fees, as the buyer will pay.
- Handoff
- Passing an online customer to a person on the floor with notes.
- Price Shopper
- A customer comparing price across stores before visiting any.
Internet Sales Manager jobs: questions job seekers ask
What does an internet sales manager do?
Runs the team that answers online leads, chats and emails, quotes prices, sets appointments and tracks which lead sources produce shows and sold cars.
Is an internet sales manager the same as a BDC manager?
Not quite. A BDC manager mostly books appointments, while an internet sales manager usually prices and sells online. Some stores blur the titles, so read the duties.
How much does an internet sales manager make?
It depends on whether the role sells. A selling role resembles a sales manager's plan and a process role resembles a BDC manager's. No exact BLS occupation exists, so no figure is shown here.
How do I become an internet sales manager?
Most come from internet sales, the BDC or the floor. Show that you write good replies, read a lead source report and coach others.
What should I ask in an internet sales manager interview?
Which lead sources you manage, who sets online prices, how credit works when an online customer walks in, and whether you can adjust the budget.
Do I need marketing experience for this job?
It helps with sources, but most stores want someone who can sell by message and phone.
