Software Sales Representative Jobs
Automotive software sales representatives sell technology to dealerships and dealer groups, such as CRM, marketing, inventory and F&I platforms.
A software sales representative sells technology to dealerships and dealer groups: CRM, marketing, inventory, service and F&I platforms. Pay is usually a base plus commission against a quota, so the pay plan matters more than the title. People come from dealership sales, other software sales, or business development.

A day as a Software Sales Representative
Your customers are busy. A general manager takes calls between deals, a service director has ten minutes before the morning rush, and a controller would rather not hear from another vendor. Mornings go to calling and emailing to book a discovery conversation. Afternoons go to demos, follow-ups and updating the CRM.
A demo is not a feature tour. You ask how the store handles leads, books appointments and deals with cancellations, then show only what fixes what they told you. Deals run through several people, often the general manager, a department head and sometimes the principal, and each needs a different answer.
After signing, the account goes to onboarding or customer success. Quota is the number everyone watches, and a bad month shows up in the weekly forecast. If you dislike being measured weekly, think twice.
How to get in
Move Over from Dealership Sales or F&I
Many vendors prefer people who have worked the floor, since you speak to a general manager with credibility. Show you can prospect on your own, because dealership sales often relies on walk-in traffic.
Start as a Sales Development Rep
Entry roles book meetings for senior reps and teach the product, the objections and the process. Expect a lower base and a quota on meetings. Ask what the promotion path to account executive looks like.
Switch from Other Software or Services Sales
Sales experience elsewhere transfers if you can explain how dealerships operate. Learn the departments, the vocabulary and the common vendor names before the first interview.
Skills and credentials
Selling Skills
- Cold calls and email outreach to busy store managers.
- Discovery questions before any presenting.
- A demo tailored to one department's problem.
- Answers to "we already have a CRM" and "our contract is not up."
Automotive Knowledge
- Who decides in a store and who only influences.
- How sales, service, BDC and F&I make money.
- The major CRM and DMS systems and how your product connects.
- Selling to dealer groups, where a corporate or regional buyer may decide for many rooftops and each store still has to adopt the product.
- Data-handling questions buyers raise, such as GLBA and the FTC Safeguards Rule, which you should route to your company's legal or security team.
- Reading a dealership's website, reviews and inventory before a call.
Tools and Credentials
- A CRM habit: notes, next steps and dates logged the same day.
- Comfort with video demos and screen sharing.
- No ASE test applies to this role.
- Brand or vendor experience: franchises you sold or serviced, systems you used.
How the job is paid
Software sales is usually a base salary plus commission against a quota. Employers call the total at quota on-target earnings. Ask what share is base, what the quota is, what share of reps hit it, and how quota is set for your territory. A good employer answers in plain terms.
Read the commission plan for the parts that cost reps money: whether commission pays at signing or first payment, whether it is clawed back if the customer cancels, how renewals and add-ons pay, and whether accelerators exist above quota. New reps often get a draw or guaranteed ramp, so ask how long it lasts.

Build your AutoHire profile
- Write a headline that says what you sell and to whom, such as software sales for dealer CRM and service tools.
- Use work history duties for concrete detail: territory, customer type, the deal sizes you handled, and whether you prospected yourself.
- Add brand experience if you sold or worked on certain franchises, with years, since employers can filter on brand.
- If you came from a dealership, list the departments and systems you used. You can talk to the same people your buyers are.
- Switch on open-to-work, complete ID verification for the Verified badge, and answer any Spark or message with a short note about the dealers you know.
Interview questions to expect
- Q1
Run a discovery call with me. I am a service director and I already have a CRM.
How to answerAsk how many appointments are lost between the call and the drive, who follows up, and what happens with no-shows. Do not name your product until you find a problem the current tool misses.
- Q2
Tell me about the last quota you carried.
How to answerGive your actual attainment from your own records, your territory, how you built pipeline and one deal you lost. If you missed, say why without blaming leads.
- Q3
A general manager says the software costs too much.
How to answerAsk what he compares it to, find what the problem costs the store, and show the part that addresses it. A good answer does not discount first.
- Q4
How do you reach a dealer principal through a gatekeeper?
How to answerDescribe a real approach: call early or late, ask for the right person by role, or reach the department head first. Mention several follow-ups without pushing.
- Q5
What do you know about how dealerships buy software?
How to answerName the roles involved and the usual friction: contract terms, and integrations with the existing DMS.
Where the career goes
- 01
Senior Account Executive
Larger accounts or dealer groups, with a bigger quota and longer cycles. Group deals involve several stores and often a procurement process.
- 02
Sales Management
You coach reps and carry the team number. Many reps stay in selling because commission beats a manager's base.
- 03
Enterprise Accounts or a Move Inside the Company
Large groups and OEM programs take months to close. Reps who like customers but not quota move to customer success, solutions or product.
Terms you will hear
- Quota
- The sales number you are expected to reach in a period.
- OTE
- On-target earnings: base pay plus commission if you hit quota exactly.
- Clawback
- Commission taken back when a customer cancels early.
- Discovery Call
- A first conversation to learn the customer's problems before demonstrating.
- Pipeline
- The set of open opportunities you are working.
- SDR
- Sales development rep, who books meetings for account executives.
Software Sales Representative jobs: questions job seekers ask
How do I get into automotive software sales?
Apply for sales development roles, or move over from dealership sales, F&I or BDC. Learn the departments and common vendor names, and show you can follow up consistently.
Do I need dealership experience to sell dealer software?
Not always, but it helps. Dealers trust people who understand their problems. If you have none, spend time learning how each department works.
How does software sales commission work?
Usually a base plus commission on closed deals against a quota. Ask when commission pays, whether it can be taken back after cancellation, and how renewals are treated.
Is software sales better than selling cars?
The schedule is often more regular and the customer is a business, but you still carry a quota. Compare the commission plans, not only the hours.
What is an SDR in automotive software?
A sales development rep finds prospects and books meetings for account executives. It is a common first role, and good ones move up into selling.
Can I do dealer software sales remotely?
Many roles are remote or hybrid because demos run on video, though some require dealership visits. Ask how much of the job is on the road.
