BDC Representative Jobs

BDC (business development center) representatives handle inbound and outbound calls, texts and internet leads, and set appointments for the sales and service departments.

Browse all jobsCreate your profile

A BDC representative answers and makes calls, texts and emails for a dealership and books appointments for sales or service. It is one of the easier ways into a store without car experience, because phone, writing and note-taking skills carry over from retail and call center work. Ask whether the work is inbound, outbound or both, and how the bonus is paid.

A day as a BDC Representative

Your shift begins with the lead list, missed calls and the appointment board. You work new leads in order, confirm the day's appointments by call or text, then move to lists of unsold shoppers or service customers who are due. Each contact is logged so the next person knows what was said. Many stores record calls, and the manager may review some with you. Recording and consent rules vary by state.

Inbound and outbound feel different. An inbound caller already wants something, so you answer well and ask for the visit. An outbound call reaches someone who may not remember filling out a form, so your opener has to name the vehicle and give a reason to talk. Some stores split the queues and some rotate reps through both.

It suits you if you stay friendly after a hang-up and keep notes the same way every time. It is a poor fit if you dislike repeated rejection.

How to get in

Come Over from a Call Center

Call handling, scripts and quotas transfer almost directly. Say what you handled and what you did with a difficult caller. Learn what a sales appointment and a service appointment each need.

Move from Retail or the Front Desk

Counters and reception teach you to greet people, handle complaints and record what happened. Name the scheduling and follow-up you did.

Start from Service or the Lot

Porters and lot attendants know the vehicles and the store layout. Ask the BDC manager to let you cover calls on a slow shift. Your knowledge of the service drive helps a service BDC.

Skills and credentials

Phone and Writing

  • Speaking clearly at an even pace, with a friendly first sentence.
  • Short, correct texts and emails that answer the question asked.
  • An opener that names the vehicle or service the customer asked about.
  • Staying steady after a rude answer and making the next call.

Process and Notes

  • Logging each call in the CRM before the next one.
  • Confirming the day before and that morning, with the address and who to ask for.
  • Recording opt-out and do-not-call requests the moment you get them.
  • Telling the floor what the customer wants so someone is ready.

Dealership Knowledge

  • The difference between a sales appointment and a service appointment.
  • For service BDC, reading a maintenance schedule and asking the right question about the vehicle.
  • Checking what the store has in inventory.
  • There is no ASE test for this role. Store training and CRM practice are what employers look for.

How the job is paid

BDC reps are commonly paid an hourly wage or a salary, with a bonus for appointments that show or sell. Some stores pay a flat amount per shown appointment, others pay on sold deals.

Ask who confirms that an appointment showed, what happens if the customer arrives later in the week, whether the bonus covers service as well as sales and when it is paid. Ask how lists are divided so one rep does not get every cold list. There is no exact BLS occupation for this role, so no wage figure is shown here.

Build your AutoHire profile

  • Write a headline that says BDC representative or appointment setter, and add sales or service if you have a preference.
  • Keep the bio to a few clear sentences. A BDC rep writes all day, and employers read it as a sample of your texts and emails.
  • Under each past job, list the phone and writing work: call handling, scheduling, follow-up, CRM entries and complaints.
  • Add the CRM or ticketing tools you have used, even outside automotive, and set your location carefully.
  • Switch on open to work, complete ID verification for the Verified badge, and apply from the job page for any BDC post that fits your shift.

Interview questions to expect

  1. Q1

What would you say first on an outbound call to someone who filled out a form?

    How to answer

Say who you are, name the specific vehicle, ask if they are still interested and offer a time to see it. Saying only that you are following up sounds vague.

  2. Q2

A caller asks the price and will not give a name. What do you do?

    How to answer

Answer what you are allowed to, ask a light question about what they are shopping for and offer a time to see the vehicle.

  3. Q3

How do you confirm an appointment so the customer shows?

    How to answer

Call or text the day before and that morning with the address, who they will meet and what to bring. Tell the floor so someone is ready.

  4. Q4

Tell me about a day with many rejections.

    How to answer

Describe how you reset, like changing your opener or stepping away for a minute. Saying rejection never bothers you is not believable.

  5. Q5

A customer tells you to stop texting. What happens?

    How to answer

Stop, record the opt-out in the CRM immediately and tell the manager. Say you would ask about your state's rules and follow the store's process.

Where the career goes

  1. 01

    Senior Rep or Team Lead

Reps with steady shows and clean notes get the harder lists and train new people. Team lead is often the first step toward the manager seat.

  2. 02

    Sales Consultant or Service Advisor

Many reps move to the floor or the drive once they know the vehicles. Tell the manager early, and ask which of your appointments sold.

  3. 03

    BDC or Internet Sales Manager

Coaching, reporting and lead sources come next. Ask to see the weekly set, show and sold rates and to help with scripts.
