What the C1 test covers
ASE describes five areas: communications, customer and internal relations, vehicle systems knowledge, sales skills, and shop operations. Together they describe the day of a service advisor, who explains problems to customers, relays them to technicians, and keeps a repair order moving.
This is the one ASE test designed around the front counter. It does not ask you to diagnose a vehicle, but it does expect you to understand enough about systems to describe a repair in plain language and judge what a technician is telling you.
Experience that counts
ASE asks for 2 years of experience in service writing specifically. Time as a technician does not count toward this requirement, which matters for technicians who move to the front of the shop. Time in a related customer role may not count either, so confirm with ASE if your background is mixed.
Is it worth taking?
Service advisor pay is usually tied to the dealership or shop, and many employers pay a mix of hourly rate and commission or bonus. BLS does not publish a separate wage series for service advisors, which is why we do not have a service advisor salary page. A credential cannot be shown to change pay without data, so treat C1 as a signal of professionalism and a way to stand out to employers who value it.
It can help most when you are changing employers, applying for a lead or manager position, or working for a manufacturer program that rewards certified staff. Ask your own employer how it treats certification.
- Keep records of your service-writing start date so the experience form is quick to complete.
- Study shop operations and sales skills, which candidates from a technical background often underweight.
- Plan the five-year renewal date when you pass.
Preparing for C1
Unlike the technical tests, C1 rewards judgment in conversations with customers and technicians. Practice explaining a repair in plain words, presenting recommended work honestly, and handling a customer who does not want to approve it. The test gives 75 minutes for 50 scored questions, about 1.5 minutes each.
Advisors who came from sales often know the customer side well and the vehicle side less well, and the reverse is true for former technicians. Be honest about which group you are in and spend your study time on the weaker half.
Many of the situations the test describes come up in daily service writing, such as a repair that costs more than the estimate, a warranty question or a customer waiting on a part. Thinking through how you handled those cases is good practice, though the right answer on the test is the one ASE expects and not always the one your shop uses.
- Learn the repair order flow from check-in to delivery, including who approves what and when.
- Review how vehicle systems work so you can describe a fault accurately.
- Practice presenting service recommendations without pressure or exaggeration.
- Ask your service manager whether the dealership or group has its own advisor training you can pair with the test.
