ASE Medium-Heavy Truck Certification
ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technician status requires passing T2 through T8, seven tests with 335 scored questions in all. T1 (gasoline engines) is not required. The T series covers diesel engines, drive train, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical, HVAC and preventive maintenance inspection (checked October 20, 2026).

Who the T series is for
The T series is built for technicians who work on Class 4 to 8 trucks and buses, and for the shops and fleets that employ them. It follows the same pattern as the automobile series, so each test is a separate credential and the Master title comes from holding the full set.
Medium and heavy trucks are tested on different systems than cars. T2 on diesel engines is the longest test in the series, and T8 on preventive maintenance inspection reflects how much of heavy-duty work is scheduled inspection and upkeep rather than breakdown repair.
How it differs from the car-side A series
Both series count eight tests, but the Master sets are built differently. The automobile Master uses A1 to A8 and leaves out the diesel test, while the truck Master leaves out the gasoline test and requires diesel. That makes sense for the equipment, since most medium and heavy trucks run on diesel.
A technician who works across light and heavy vehicles can hold credentials in both series. Several areas carry the same name, such as brakes and electrical, but the tests are different because the systems are different.
Advanced diesel credentials
The L2 advanced diesel diagnosis test builds on this series. ASE accepts T2 as the diesel engine prerequisite and T6 as the electrical prerequisite, so a technician who completes those two exams is one step from registering for L2.
That makes the order worth planning: T2 and T6 count toward the Master set and also unlock the specialist test.
- T2 and T6 are both Master requirements and L2 prerequisites.
- T8 is a good early test for technicians who spend most days on inspections and preventive maintenance.
- Employers differ on how they reward the credential, so ask about pay and test reimbursement.
Experience and renewal
The work experience rule is the same as for other repair certifications: pass the test and document hands-on experience, with formal training able to substitute for some of it. Certifications stay valid for 5 years. The recertification versions are about half the length, for example 28 questions for T2 against 55.
Preparing for the T series
Medium and heavy truck tests reward technicians who understand how systems behave on a loaded, working vehicle. Air brake systems on heavy trucks, for example, are built and diagnosed differently from the hydraulic brakes on a car, so experience on light vehicles alone does not carry over completely.
Pace is generous but not unlimited. T2 allows 90 minutes for 55 scored questions, about 1.6 minutes each, and T3 allows 60 minutes for 40. Confirm the current numbers on ase.com before you book.
- Start with the system you work on most, then add the others as your experience grows.
- Use the service information and repair manuals you already rely on at work to review.
- Talk to a lead technician or shop foreman who has passed the test about what it emphasized.
- Fleet and dealer employers differ on whether they pay for tests, so ask before you register.
ASE Medium-Heavy Truck (T1 to T8): common questions
What do I need for ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck status?
Tests T2 through T8: Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, HVAC Systems, Preventive Maintenance Inspection. T1 gasoline engines is not required.
Which T test has the most questions?
T2 Diesel Engines, with 55 scored questions and 90 minutes allowed.
Does a diesel technician need a commercial driver license for ASE?
ASE certification and a commercial driver license are separate. ASE tests technical knowledge, while a license is issued by a state. Some employers want technicians who can road test heavy vehicles, so having one can widen your options.
How is T8 different from the other tests?
T8 covers preventive maintenance inspection, so it tests how well you find problems during scheduled service, where the other tests focus on one vehicle system.
How long do T series certifications last?
5 years, after which you take the shorter recertification test for each area.
Where these facts come from
Test lengths, rules and fees are taken from the ASE pages listed under Sources and were checked on October 20, 2026. ASE can change them at any time, so confirm on ase.com before you register. ASE certification is a credential from a nonprofit, not a government license. AutoHire is not affiliated with ASE. Calculated totals, where shown, are AutoHire sums of ASE's published fees.
