ASE Recertification and the Renewal App
ASE certifications are valid for 5 years. You renew by taking shorter recertification tests, with fees capped at $186 per order ($220 with the registration fee), or, for A1 to A9, by using the ASE Renewal App at $52 a year. The app is not a test (checked October 20, 2026).

The five-year clock
Every ASE certification carries an expiration date 5 years after you earned it. Because technicians collect tests over time, expiration dates scatter across years, and keeping one list of them is the single most useful habit.
Recertification tests are shorter than the originals, often about half as many questions. For A1 the first-time test has 45 scored questions and the recertification has 23. A technician with several credentials expiring together can recertify them in one order.
The fee cap
Each general recertification test costs $62. ASE caps the cost of tests in a single order at $186, so the most anyone pays to recertify in one order is $220 including the $34 registration fee, however many tests it contains.
That makes batching worthwhile: renewing all eight Master tests separately would cost $496 before the registration fee, against the $186 cap in one order.
The ASE Renewal App
The app is open to technicians who have passed an automobile-series test, and currently covers A1 to A9 only. You receive one question per certification every 30 days. Most questions give you 2 minutes, and questions with a data table, wiring diagram or illustration give you 5. Earning 8 credits in one area extends that certification by one year.
ASE says plainly that the app is not a test and not a replacement for traditional testing. It also offers first-time paid subscribers a free 12-month extension on current eligible certifications, and says that expired certifications take 8 to 12 months of credits to reinstate.
- The app suits technicians who prefer short monthly practice to a long test day.
- Recertification tests suit people who want to renew everything at once.
- Only A1 to A9 qualify for the app, so L, T, B, C and P credentials need tests.
Choosing between retesting and the app
A planning example, using only ASE's published fees: a technician with five general certifications expiring in the same year would pay $310 for the tests at $62 each, but ASE's cap holds the test total to $186, so the order comes to $220 with the $34 registration fee. The app costs $52 a year, though earning enough credits to extend several areas takes months of steady answers.
Neither option is better for everyone. The app spreads effort out over the year and suits someone who would rather answer one question a month. Retesting suits someone who wants it finished in a day and who holds credentials the app does not cover.
Whichever you choose, start early. The worst time to learn that a credential has expired is when an employer or customer asks for proof of it.
- Write down every expiration date and set a reminder a few months ahead.
- Group expiring credentials into the same order to use the fee cap.
- Check ase.com for current app rules, because the list of eligible tests can change.
