Service Advisor Jobs

Service advisors are the link between customers and the shop: they write up repair orders, explain recommended work and keep customers updated.

Browse all jobsCreate your profile

A service advisor writes the repair order, explains the work and keeps the customer posted until the car is delivered. You do not have to be a technician, but you do have to stay steady in a full lane. Pay is usually partly tied to what the shop sells through you, so read the plan before you say yes.

Also known as dealership service advisor and service consultant.

A day as a Service Advisor

You open before the doors do: appointment list, who is in, what carried over from yesterday. Then the lane fills. Every customer gets a walk-around, a concern in their own words, a check of history and open recalls, and a promise time you can keep. At many stores, your first week is spent beside a senior advisor while the manager reads every RO you touch.

The rest of the day is the phone and the board. You call with inspection findings, chase late parts, get approval for added work and answer is my car ready on repeat. If a technician moves your promise time, you call the customer before it passes. The job suits people who can juggle a dozen open ROs and take interruptions without snapping.

How to get in

Start as a Porter, Cashier or BDC Rep

The common route is inside one store. Porters learn the cars, cashiers learn pay types and how an invoice closes, and BDC reps learn to book appointments with irritated callers. Tell the service manager you want the drive and ask to sit with an advisor during the rush.

Move Over from the Technician Side

You know what a noise means and how long a repair takes. Your gaps are selling and upset customers. Bring examples of repairs you explained to an advisor or customer, and say how you will learn the rest.

Move Over from Sales or Retail

You bring customer handling and comfort with being measured. Expect questions about vehicles. Read the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual for the brands you want, and learn what a repair order contains before the interview.

Skills and credentials

At the Drive

  • A concern the technician can use: when it happens, how it feels.
  • Promise times set from the board, not hope.
  • Inspection findings sorted into safety, due by schedule and can wait.
  • A call to the customer when the total passes what they approved.

Systems and Credentials

  • A DMS and scheduler such as CDK, Reynolds and Reynolds or Tekion.
  • Customer-pay, warranty and internal pay types.
  • ASE C1 Automobile Service Consultant, which is optional and needs 2 years of service writing first.
  • Manufacturer advisor training and brand years.

What Managers Check

  • Hours per RO and whether inspections were shown.
  • Comebacks and CSI comments with your name on them.
  • Declined work written down and followed up.
  • ROs with cause and correction filled in.

How the job is paid

Advisors are rarely on a plain hourly wage. Common plans are hourly plus commission on labor and parts gross, a draw against commission, salary plus a bonus on CSI and hours per RO, or a percentage of gross, sometimes with spiffs. Get the plan in writing. Check what commission is calculated on, whether warranty and internal ROs count, and what happens to your pay when an RO is adjusted after you were paid.

There is no exact BLS occupation for service advisors, so no official wage figure is shown here. Ask what a normal month paid the last advisor in the seat, whether a guarantee ends, and how the lane is split. A fair plan in a busy lane can beat a rich plan where traffic is thin.

Build your AutoHire profile

  • Put the seat and brand in your headline, such as Service Advisor, Toyota, so title and brand searches find you.
  • In work history duties, name your DMS, the pay types you handled, and whether warranty pre-authorizations were part of the job.
  • Add brand experience with years for each manufacturer. Job posts carry a Brand Experience field and job search can filter by brand.
  • List ASE C1 or manufacturer training under certifications, and fill in education even if it is not automotive.
  • Use the bio for one real example, like a customer who came back angry and what you did, instead of saying you like people.
  • Turn on open-to-work and complete ID verification for the Verified badge. A Spark from an employer arrives in the app and by email.

Interview questions to expect

  1. Q1

Walk me through the write-up on a car with an intermittent noise.

    How to answer

Name your questions: cold or warm, turning or straight, what speed. Record the customer's words, check history and recalls, walk the car, and note conditions on the RO. Say diagnosis time is authorized separately.

  2. Q2

How do you present a recommended service without it sounding like an upsell?

    How to answer

Tie it to something visible: a pad measurement, a photo, the owner's manual interval. Sort items into safety, due now and can wait, and write down what was declined.

  3. Q3

A technician needs two more hours and you promised the car in one.

    How to answer

Call the customer before the promise time. Offer a ride or loaner if the store has one, get new approval if the total moves, and note it on the RO.

  4. Q4

A customer is back for the same problem. How do you start?

    How to answer

Let them finish without defending the last visit. Link the new RO to the original, bring in the foreman, and check the technician's notes before giving a time.

  5. Q5

Which of your numbers do you watch weekly?

    How to answer

Name hours per RO, declined work and CSI comments, say which is weakest and what habit you changed. A specific habit beats a promise to try harder.

Where the career goes

  1. 01

    Senior Advisor or Lead

Steady numbers and few comebacks get you the bigger accounts or a lead title with a bonus. Ask what the lead role actually pays.

  2. 02

    Warranty or Service Office

Advisors who write clean ROs often move into warranty or office work, with steadier pay and less customer traffic.

  3. 03

    Service Manager

Learn dispatch, scheduling and technician management, and you are measured on shop numbers instead of your own tickets.

Service Advisor jobs: questions job seekers ask

Do I need to be a technician to be a service advisor?

No. Stores hire advisors from sales, customer service and support roles. You must explain repairs accurately and learn quickly.

Is a service advisor the same as a service consultant?

In most stores, yes. ASE says Automobile Service Consultant, so search both titles.

Do I need ASE C1 to get hired?

No. It is optional, and ASE wants 2 years of service writing experience before certifying you.

How are service advisors paid?

Usually a mix of hourly or draw with commission or bonus. Ask for the plan in writing.

Is service advising stressful?

It can be. The morning rush and promise times land on you. A fully staffed shop and a fair lane split help a lot.
