Auto Body Technician Jobs
Auto body technicians repair collision-damaged vehicles, restoring structure, panels and finish to manufacturer standards.
An auto body technician repairs collision damage: panels, structure, plastics and the parts that bolt back on. Most shops pay by the repair hour instead of the clock, so how supplements and redo time are handled shapes your week. Ask which repair procedures the shop actually follows and who owns the frame equipment before you accept.

A day as an Auto Body Technician
A car arrives torn down or half apart. Your first job is often finding what the original estimate missed: you pull the bumper cover and inner liner, check the structure, and photograph hidden damage so the estimator can file a supplement. Once it is approved, you pull, weld, replace or straighten each part to the vehicle maker's published procedure.
The work is loud, dusty and physical. You use a frame machine with a measuring system, welders, panel adhesive, rivets and hand tools. Newer vehicles bring aluminum panels, high-strength steel with limits on heat and straightening, and sensors behind bumpers and glass that need calibration afterward. You look up the procedure before cutting.
It suits people who like fitting parts back to factory gaps and can live with production pay. It is a poor fit if you want a steady hourly check and dislike solving a puzzle someone else's accident left behind.
How to get in
Start as a Helper or Apprentice
Helpers strip cars, bag and tag parts, sand and refit. Ask who will teach you structural and panel work, and whether you are paid hourly while you learn.
Finish a Collision Repair Program
A trade school or community college program gives you welding practice, panel work and measuring basics. Bring photos of project repairs.
Move Over from Mechanical Work or Paint Prep
Mechanics already know suspension and electrical, and they need metalwork and welding. Paint prep workers know panels and surfaces, and they need structure and fit.

BLS occupation: "Automotive Body and Related Repairers" (49-3021), all industries. BLS reports this occupation as "Automotive Body and Related Repairers". It covers collision repair at dealership body shops, independent collision centers and insurer-affiliated shops.
Most body shops pay production: you are credited the labor hours on the estimate and approved supplements, not the hours on the clock. Some pay hourly, or hourly with an incentive. This page shows official BLS wages for auto body and related repairers across all industries.
Read three things. First, who gets paid on a supplement: if you find extra damage and the insurer pays late or never, do you lose those hours? Second, redo time: if a panel comes back for a gap or a weld, is it unpaid? Third, volume: ask how many cars were in the shop last month and how many body technicians shared them. Also ask who owns the frame equipment and welders, and whether I-CAR and ASE tests are paid.
Build your AutoHire profile
- Write a headline that names your specialty, such as structural and aluminum repair, since employers search by title and keyword.
- Under each job, list duties in shop terms: teardown and damage analysis, structural pulls, welding, panel replacement, plastic repair and ADAS-related refit.
- Add ASE B3, B4 and B5 and I-CAR training under certifications, with dates.
- Fill in brand experience with years for the makes whose procedures you worked to, because employers can filter by brand.
- Say in your bio whether you want production pay or hourly, then switch on open-to-work.
- Complete ID verification for the Verified badge, and use messages to ask a shop how supplements and redo time are paid.
Interview questions to expect
- Q1
How do you find hidden damage on a car that arrives with an estimate?
How to answerDescribe the teardown: remove covers and liners, check mounts and gaps, measure the structure, and photograph what you find. Explain how you pass it to the estimator for a supplement.
- Q2
A front rail has crash damage. Walk me through the repair.
How to answerMount the car, measure against the maker's dimensions, pull in stages and remeasure. Sectioning or replacement follows only where the maker allows it, with the specified welds and corrosion protection.
- Q3
What do you do when the repair procedure and the estimate disagree?
How to answerStop, show the estimator the procedure page and photos, and ask for the operation to be added. Do not skip it to save time.
- Q4
Have you worked on aluminum or high-strength steel?
How to answerName which and what equipment you used. Say what you had to learn.
- Q5
What happens when a production job takes longer than its hours?
How to answerSay you tell the estimator or manager early and document why, and give a case where quality came first.
Where the career goes
- 01
Lead Body Technician or Body Foreman
Leads check repairs against the procedure, assign work and train helpers. Shops promote people they trust on measurements.
- 02
Structural or Aluminum Specialist
Brand training and the right equipment make you the person who gets the hardest repairs.
- 03
Estimator
ASE B6 needs 2 years of estimating experience, so the years you spend writing estimates matter. A technician's eye for hidden damage helps.
- 04
Collision Center Manager
Managers run production, parts and insurer relations. It is a pay-plan change as well as a job change.
Terms you will hear
- Production Pay
- Pay by the repair hours completed on a job, rather than the hours clocked.
- Teardown
- Taking a damaged vehicle apart to find hidden damage before the repair plan is final.
- Supplement
- An additional estimate for damage found after the first write-up.
- Structural Repair
- Repair or replacement of the parts that carry crash loads, done to the vehicle maker's method.
- Frame Machine
- Equipment that holds and pulls a structure back to its measured dimensions.
- Sectioning
- Cutting and replacing part of a structural member at the places the vehicle maker allows.
- ADAS Calibration
- Resetting cameras and radar after repair so driver assistance systems read correctly.
Auto Body Technician jobs: questions job seekers ask
How do I become an auto body technician with no experience?
Apply as a helper or finish a collision repair program. Ask who trains helpers and whether you earn hourly while you learn.
Do auto body technicians need certification?
Not always. ASE and I-CAR training improve your options, and some manufacturers and insurers prefer certified shops.
Is auto body work flat rate?
Most shops pay by repair hours credited, and some pay hourly. Read how supplements and redo time are treated.
Do body technicians buy their own tools?
Usually hand tools yes, while the shop owns frame machines and welders. Ask what is supplied, especially for aluminum.
What is the difference between body work and paint?
Body technicians repair and replace parts, and painters prepare and refinish them. Many painters start by prepping body work.
Which ASE tests fit an auto body technician?
B3 for non-structural work, B4 for structural and B5 for mechanical and electrical parts. B2 is painting, and all four make a Master Collision Repair Technician.
