Regional Manager Jobs

Regional managers oversee a territory of dealerships or accounts for a manufacturer, dealer group or automotive services company.

Browse all jobsCreate your profile

A regional manager answers for several stores or accounts without running any of them, so the job pays for judgment about other managers. Most arrive from a general manager or district seat with stores that improved under them. Find out first which version you are applying for: dealer group, manufacturer or services company.

A day as a Regional Manager

The title covers three jobs. At a dealer group you sit above general managers and answer to an owner. At a manufacturer you sit above district managers and argue with dealer principals about allocation, facility standards and incentives. At a services or finance company the region is a set of branches. Ask which one it is before anything else.

A visit starts the night before, with the financial statement and a search for the line that does not fit: used inventory aging while new looks fine, service retention slipping. You meet the general manager first, walk the lot, the service drive and the showroom, then sit with department heads.

It suits someone who gets more from coaching a leader than from closing a deal, and who can live with hotel rooms. If you still want to be at the desk with the customer, it will feel like a step away.

How to get in

Step Up from General Manager

The common route at dealer groups. Several quarters of hitting targets and a record of promoting or replacing department heads is the evidence. Name the managers you developed and what became of them.

Move Over from a Manufacturer Field Role

District and zone people move up inside the factory when a regional opening appears. You need a district with improving results and good standing with its dealer principals.

Come Up Through a Department Director Chain

A fixed ops or F&I director over several stores already acts as a regional for one function. Ask for profit and loss exposure early, since that is what earns you the full region.

Skills and credentials

Managing Managers

  • Promoting, coaching or replacing store managers, with reasons.
  • Telling a strong general manager what they do not want to hear.
  • Short written summaries leadership can act on.
  • A visit routine you can describe step by step.

Numbers and Programs

  • Reading a dealership financial statement department by department.
  • Days supply, aged units, service retention and expense control.
  • Manufacturer incentive and allocation rules, if the job is franchised.
  • How chargebacks and pay types work inside a pay plan.

Credentials and Logistics

  • No ASE test applies to this role.
  • A valid driver's license and a clear answer on overnight travel.
  • Dealer licensing is generally held store by store and state rules vary, so ask whether your role touches any license.
  • A reference from a general manager who reported to you.

How the job is paid

Expect a base salary plus a bonus tied to the region: store profit, unit targets, satisfaction, program participation, or a mix. Get the plan in writing, ask what share of total pay is bonus, and ask who can change the targets mid-year.

Compare against the general managers who would report to you, since a regional paid less than the people underneath has a hard time leading them. Ask about a vehicle or allowance and how fast expenses are repaid.

There is no exact Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation for this role, so no official wage figure is shown on this page.

Build your AutoHire profile

  • Write a headline that states scope, such as a multi-store regional manager on a named franchise, instead of only a title.
  • Use work history duties for the stores you were accountable for, the managers who reported to you and the programs you rolled out.
  • Add brand experience with years on each franchise, since employers can filter candidate search by brand and years.
  • Use the bio to describe how you run a visit and what you read first.
  • Turn on open-to-work if your situation allows, finish ID verification for the Verified badge, and answer a Spark, an invitation to a specific open job, with the stores you would want to see first.

Interview questions to expect

  1. Q1

Walk me through the hour before you visit a store you worry about.

    How to answer

Name what you pull: the financial statement, aged inventory, the last visit notes. Pick two or three issues, not ten, and the number you check first, such as days supply.

  2. Q2

Tell me about a general manager you moved or let go.

    How to answer

Describe the signals over months, the coaching that came first and how you told the staff. Admit one thing you would redo. Do not make the manager the villain.

  3. Q3

A dealer principal says your allocation decision is unfair. Now what?

    How to answer

Listen, check the numbers behind it, explain the rule, and escalate only a real exception. Do not promise what you cannot deliver.

  4. Q4

Two stores need you on the same day. What did you do last time?

    How to answer

State the trade-off, name the store you chose and why, and say how you covered the other by phone or through a delegate.

  5. Q5

How do you read a bonus plan before approving it?

    How to answer

Check what behavior it pays, how chargebacks are treated, and whether a manager could hit the number while hurting satisfaction. Give an example of a plan you changed.

Where the career goes

  1. 01

Senior Regional or Director of Operations

A bigger territory or a group-wide role, usually with authority over pay plans and store-level hiring.

  2. 02

    Vice President of Operations

You answer for the whole group's profit. The work shifts from visits to deciding which stores get capital and which managers get promoted.

  3. 03

    Cross Between Factory and Group

Factory regionals get recruited by dealer groups, and group operators sometimes go to the factory. Either direction works if you can explain the other side's pressures.

Terms you will hear

Allocation
How a manufacturer divides limited vehicles among its dealers.
Aged Inventory
Vehicles that sat past the store's target, costing interest and value.
Days Supply
How long current inventory lasts at the present selling pace.
Dealer Principal
The owner or lead executive of a dealership.
Floorplan
The credit line that finances a store's inventory.
P&L Review
A department-by-department walk through a store's profit and loss.

Regional Manager jobs: questions job seekers ask

How do I become a regional manager at a car dealership group?

Most come from general manager roles. Run a store well through a full cycle, develop managers under you, and tell the group you want more than one store.

Is a regional manager the same as a district sales manager?

No. A district sales manager usually works for a manufacturer and covers fewer dealers with a sales focus. A regional sits above districts or stores and carries profit and people decisions.

Do I need a college degree to be a regional manager?

Many employers weigh store results and management history above a degree. Education is a field on your AutoHire profile, so list it if you have it.

How much travel does a regional manager do?

It depends on store count and the distance between stores. Ask for expected overnights per month in the first interview.

Can a regional manager work from home?

Reports and calls can happen remotely, but the job depends on being in the stores. Ask where your home base is and how much on-site time is expected.

Should I leave a general manager job for a regional role?

Only if you want to coach leaders instead of running a store. A strong store can pay a general manager more, so compare the bonus with your current pay.
