Controller Jobs

Dealership controllers lead the accounting function: financial statements, internal controls, reporting to the manufacturer and support for the general manager.

Browse all jobsCreate your profile

A dealership controller runs accounting: the monthly close, the financial statement, the manufacturer report, reconciliations and internal controls. Owners hire for a clean close and dealership-specific knowledge, not for an accounting degree alone. A CPA can help, though many controllers do not hold one.

A day as a Controller

Most days start with the close schedule. You check that yesterday's deals posted, that the bank and floorplan balances match the ledger and that no vehicle sits in inventory twice or not at all. Accounts payable asks for approval on invoices. A department head wants to know why a gross figure moved. You answer from the schedules, not from memory.

The month-end close is the main event. You reconcile receivables, contracts in transit, parts and vehicle inventory, work in process and accruals, then produce the financial statement and the manufacturer report by their deadlines. Then you sit with the general manager and explain what the numbers say.

The role suits people who trust paper over opinion and can tell a salesperson that a figure is wrong. It does not suit someone who wants a quiet job. Dealership accounting has many hands in the books: sales posts deals, service posts repair orders, parts posts invoices, and every one of them can post something wrong. You find it, trace it to the person and fix the habit as well as the entry.

How to get in

Grow from Dealership Accounting

The most direct route is staff accountant, then assistant controller, in the same store or group. You learn how the dealer management system posts deals and how the manufacturer statement is built.

Move from the Business Office

Office managers who handle reconciliations and month-end schedules can step up, especially with accounting classes. Ask the controller to teach you the financial statement.

Come from Public Accounting or Another Industry

Accountants from firms or other businesses bring audit and reporting discipline. You must learn the dealership vocabulary, floorplan and manufacturer rules. Say so openly, and expect a group to value a stint working inside a store.

How the job is paid

Controller: BLS annual wages, May 2025
MeasureUnited StatesPhoenix-Mesa-Chandler, AZ
Median$166,570$145,940
Middle half earns$125,490 to $219,980$109,930 to $193,020
Lowest-paid tenth$94,310 or less$84,060 or less
Highest-paid tenth$323,270 or more$269,990 or more

BLS occupation: "Financial Managers" (11-3031), all industries. BLS reports this occupation as "Financial Managers" across every industry. Controllers are one of the job titles inside this group, along with treasurers, finance directors and similar roles, so the figures are broader than dealership accounting.

Controller pay is usually a salary, often with a bonus tied to the close, audit results or store profit, and a group role may carry a higher title. Ask what the bonus depends on and who decides. The closest BLS match is shown on this page with its wages. The BLS category is broader than dealership accounting, so use it as a reference, not an offer benchmark.

Scope drives the offer. A multi-store group with several franchises and floorplan lines asks more than a single store. Ask how many stores, how many staff report to you, what system the group uses and whether an outside accountant helps.

Ask for a handover period with the outgoing controller, and ask when the last clean close was. A rushed start with unreconciled schedules produces the late closes you were hired to fix, and you will be judged on them.

Controller jobs: questions job seekers ask

How do I become a dealership controller?

Most advance from accounting roles, such as staff accountant or assistant controller, and learn the dealer management system and manufacturer reporting.

Does a dealership controller need a CPA?

Not always. Many have an accounting degree and dealership experience. A CPA can help, but not every employer requires one.

Is controller the same as comptroller?

Yes, the titles are used for the same role. Controller is more common.

What is the hardest part of dealership accounting?

The volume of daily transactions and the manufacturer's rules. Clean reconciliations make the close much easier.

Can I move from public accounting to a dealership?

Yes. Expect to learn dealer vocabulary, floorplan and manufacturer reporting first.

Is there an ASE certification for controllers?

No. ASE tests cover technician, collision, parts and service consultant work. For controllers, credentials such as a degree or CPA license matter.
